Statistical Design and Analysis of Experiments : With Applications to Engineering and Science
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (May, 1989)
Authors: Robert L. Mason, Richard F. Gunst, and James L. Hess
Average review score:

well written applications-oriented text
Mason, Gunst and Hess have done a great deal of consulting in industry which has provided them with an understanding of the design and analysis of linear and nonlinear models. In fact, I have had some direct experience with Bob Mason from Southwest Research Institute. When I was working at a medical device company owned by St. Jude Medical Inc., Southwest Research Institute had been contracted to analyze data from one of our animal experiments for defibrillation thresholds. As the new statistician in the company I needed to get acquainted with their work. The book illustrates many designs using real world problems. The first 5 chapters (88 pages) cover elementary statistical concepts and methods. The next 6 chapters (145 pages) cover designs. Most standard designs are covered including full factorials, balanced incomplete blocks, latin squares, fractional factorials and nested and crossover designs. There is also a chapter on response surface designs including rotatable designs, central composite designs and Box-Behnken designs. The rest of the book, some 368 pages, deals with statistical analysis of data from designed experiments. It makes a very good reference source.

The only disadvantage of it is that there have been many advances in the design of experiments since 1989 when the book was published. The topic of robust parameter design is not covered because much of the development occurred after 1989. Hints of the topic and mention of the Taguchi approach appear only on pages 108-110. To learn much more about the recent developments in the design of experiments see Hamada and Wu (2000) "Experiments". My review of Hamada and Wu can be found on Amazon.

The Ultimate Beagle: The Natural Born Rabbit Dog
Published in Hardcover by OTR Publications (June, 1997)
Author: Robert L. Mason
Average review score:

A Treasure Beagle Lovers Have Been Hunting For!
Robert L. Mason brings his love for his father, the heartland and beagling to life in this delightful book. He intwines these themes adeptly. This book is a real treasure for people who hunt with beagles or for the pet owner. As the owner of a beagle, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It will certainly brighten up one's day. Beagles are truly delightful pets.

A great book about super dogs, by an extraordinary man.
I have never met Robert Mason, but I can say that for his ability to bring to better awareness some of the feeling of his father's generation - he should be considered a national treasure. This book is not only about that most companionable of man's best friends - the Beagle - it is about life in rural America, friendships, and taking time for one another. This book celebrates a dog's place in our lives, and would help anyone appreciate the role of small game hunting in the life of rural America. Mason goes beyond this, however, and brings us full circle to an understanding of love for the land and its creatures - and how in partnership with one's Beagle - all of us can continue in his father's tradition.

Understanding Telecommunications: Systems, Networks, and Applications, Vol 1
Published in Hardcover by Andan Publisher (01 February, 2000)
Authors: Ming-Chwan Chow and Carl R. Mason
Average review score:

A great telecommunications reference work
Understanding Telecommunications: Systems, Networks, and Applications Vol 2 is a store house of valuable information about advanced telecommunications topics. This is the second book of a 2 volume set, and it covers Wireless, Data Communications, LANs/WANs, VoIP, FAX, Network Management, Error Control, and System Timing & Synchronization techniques. The content is presented in a text book format that can be easily adapted for self-study and general review. The scope of the material is broad, and covers not only technical details but also practical applications. The combination of Vol 1 and 2 provides an unmatched reference work, that is a reliable source of conscise and accurate information. These books deserve to be included in any engineer's, technician's, marketeer's, or student's telecommunications library. They are extremely informative, and you will use them often. The author has written two other excellent books (Understanding SONET/SDH, and Understanding Wireless), and these latest works are welcome additions to this outstanding series.

A valuable addition to your technical library
Understanding Telecommunications: Systems, Networks and Applications Vol. 1 & 2 fills the need for an up to date reference that clearly explains this complex and rapidly changing subject. This two volume set contains over 1,400 pages of material that cover virtually every aspect of telecommunications. The presentation is crisp, the descriptions are conscise, many clean illustrations are included, and a variety of meaningful examples are provided that can be applied to real-life situations. Review questions (with answers)accompany each topic to confirm the reader's comprehension, and the numerous acronyms/terms used in this field are carefully explained in a manner that eliminates confusion. The scope of these two volumes is broad, but the depth and amount of detail devoted to each topic provides a thorough level of understanding. The format follows a logical sequence, and every chapter contains a brief history of the technological advancements that formed the foundation of present-day systems. These books are valuable as both a reference and refresher, especially given the fast pace of this industry and frequent changes in work assignments. It is highly recommended for system engineers, designers, marketing specialists, technicians, and students. These two volumes will certainly be frequently used books in your technical library, and a source for obtaining reliable information. The author has published two other books: "Understanding SONET/SDH: Standards & Applications" and "Understanding Wireless: Digital Mobile, Cellular & PCS" which are also recommended for readers that require detailed coverage of these specific subjects.

Wayne Morse: A Political Biography
Published in Hardcover by Oregon Historical Society (June, 1997)
Author: Mason Drukman
Average review score:

Fascinating account of a true maverick
Senator Morse is one of our country's great historical figures. Mr. Drukman conveys the fascinating history of a man who was at the center of the cold war and foresaw a great many of the tragedies that unfolded in american foreign policy during the 1960's- most notably Vietnam. He was an outstanding politician- they just don't make em like this anymore.

Excellent, thorough examination of a fascinating leader.
Drukman explores nearly every facet of this incredible leader. Further, he does so with clear, thoughtful writing which illuminates the fascinating figures in every chapter. After researching Wayne Morse for three years myself (for a documentary film), I can honestly say that he is the only politician I know of who never once strayed from principle or betrayed the public trust. Indeed he sought to save America from those who did.

Wild Fox: A True Story
Published in Hardcover by Down East Books (July, 1993)
Authors: Cherie Mason, Jo Ellen McAllister, Joellen M. Stammen, and Jo Ellen McAllister Stammen
Average review score:

Foxy
The steel-jawed leghold trap has been outlawed in more than 65 nations as cruel and barbaric, but is still legal in most of the U.S.

The author wrote this true story of her lengthy encounter with a red fox in Deer Isle off the coast of Maine, partly in hopes that the tale would encourage the banning of such traps in the U.S. It had lost a foot to such a trap.

The story first appeared in a shorter version in the August 1988 issue of Cricket. Here, it runs 32 pages, and is accompanied by lavish color sketches of the wild animal, temporarily tamed by both human friend and desperate need.

What ultimately became of the fox in this story, which the author called Vicky, we'll never know. But based on her poetic reporting, readers can hope for the best.

The author engrosses even the youngest of readers in a way that is, well, foxy. Alyssa A. Lappen

A beautifully illustrated, moving story of human and fox
The pictures are beautiful and the story bitter sweet. The trap surviving fox comes to depend on the human and the human on the fox. This book should be in every child's library, and many adults' library , too.
